In class today we will:
  1. Begin/continue watching (and discussing/analyzing) the film Edward Scissorhands. You should take notes as we view film in the handout  1.4-1.7 ICA Watching the Film  which is due:
MAROON: Before class starts on 9/25
GOLD: After the film, before the end of class on 9/26

You will also be writing a film response based on the following prompt and it should guide you as we watch and discuss:

How does Tim Burton’s 1990 film Edward Scissorhands create a modern monster myth and/or fairy tale? In other words, how does the film use the monster/misfit contrasts and definitions to comment on American society in the late 1980’s – what is truly monstrous? What does society fear? What does the film say about conformity and individuality?

    Monsters & Misfits

Monsters and misfits are pervasive in our culture because they represent both individual and societal fears and anxieties. The central questions we will consider include: What is a monster and/or misfit and why do we create them in literature and film? What do they address that we face in our culture and society and why do they create horror in humanity? How does the uncanny come into play when examining society’s fears? What influences from mythology, folklore and classical horror texts are still in our society with our own versions of monsters and misfits? What differences are there in our interpretations of monsters and misfits and what do those changes signify?
